MIDI WEEK 4

SAMPLING
In The lesson we took a very brief look into basics of sampling and the bridge between Audio and MIDI First of all we created some audio tracks

We were told to bring pre-prepared samples to use which could either be recorded ourselves or from a source online. I brung in one from my sample library, which was a soft piano melody.

The next stage was to convert our track into a sample track, we can do this by going to convert>convert to sampler track. Click 'Transient markers' which will convert you audio into midi notes based on the spikes in the audio

Now we can edit an audio track on basis of editing midi. This can be extremely useful when wanting to edit your audio so it fits in how and where you want it to be in your track.

MIDI EFFECTS
Overview of the effects that are available to place over your MIDI regions

ARPEGGIATOR: Takes the currently placed notes and sequencing them. Useful when a piece you've played does not seem to have enough depth. You can set the settings for what the effect sequencing
CHORD TRIGGER: This processes single notes into their respective chords. You can also modify the settings for this process

MIDI WEEK 3
PIANO ROLL
The piano roll is the home of any MIDI notes you have in your project. This is where you can either play your notes in using musical typing on a computer keyboard or a external MIDI controller. It is also possible to draw in your notes by using the pencil tool, this can be extremely useful for people who are not skilled with playing notes or chords to a complex level. On the piano roll, a notes vertical positional indicates the pitch of it while the horizontal position indicated how long the note is and where it starts playing

TOOLS
There are many tools you can use to edit and customise your MIDI. You have primary tool which can be accessed by clicking the mouse while on the piano roll. There is also a secondary which can be accessed at the same time as the primary tool by holding the command key while clicking the mouse.

POINTER TOOL: This tool is the default tool and is used to move and increase or decrease your notes

PENCIL TOOL: This tool is used to draw notes in to your piano roll
ERASER TOOL: Deletes regions and events from the track
TEXT TOOL: Gives you the ability to rename regions and other events
SCISSOR TOOL: Enables you to cut up your regions into different parts
GLUE TOOL: Opposite of the scissor tool, can place regions together
MUTE TOOL: This mutes selected notes
ZOOM TOOL: Enables you to zoom in on your track
FADE TOOL: Gives you the ability to add a volume fade in/out onto your regions
AUTOMATION TOOL: Allows you to set automation
FLEX TOOL: Allows you to manipulate an audio regions waveform
MARQUEE TOOL: Enables you to select and edit regions

MIDI EFFECTS
MIDI effects can be extremely useful in turning your midi work into a more complex and professional state. Effects manipulate your notes and increase depth and character.

Ironically, however, radio technology led to improvements in record-making, specifically through the use of electronically amplified disc cutters. By 1925, all phonograph discs were being manufactured utilising this new technology.

SONG ANALYSIS 3

SONG ANALYSIS 2

MIDI WEEK 2

1. Picking a Tempo

Picking a tempo is vital in the opening of making a track. The tempo must fit the mood you want for your song, wether that's fast paced or slow paced.

I aim to make hip-hop, trap and drill music, so for me the right choice was 140bpm, which is shared by most songs of these genres

To change the tempo, look for it in the top bar in Logic, and use your mouse to increase or decrease

2. Turn on Advanced Tools

If I want to make tracks on Logic Pro X as a professional musician then Advanced Tools must be turned on to have full grasp of all the necessary features needed to make

To enable you must go to Logic Pro > Preferences > Advanced Tools > Enable all

Note that you should also enable recording, this is the red R button on your software instrument's

3. Recording the MIDI

This is the stage where we play our music in using a software instrument. You can play the melody you want either using a MIDI keyboard, musical typing or drawing your notes in on the piano roll. There is a selection of software instruments made by apple to use.

I wanted a nice soft eclectic piano melody, I recorded a simple but vibey melody which i was happy with

4. Quantising and Velocity

These two tools are vital in polishing your midi into a musically accurate sound. Quantising will put your notes in time according to the time signature you want, this is vital in ensuring your midi is in time with your project's tempo. After Quantising, the velocity tool can be inserted. Using this tool will allow you to customise the accents on your notes and how hard/soft they will sound. velocity can be measure by the colour of the midi notes on your keyboard, Red being the highest and green being the lowest

These steps are just the general basics and first things you should do before going further into your track.
